Comfort Reads

I suppose everyone has some books that are considered comfort reads, books you turn to when you are feeling sick or depressed or you just need some cheer me up... At first glance I would say that all my keepers can be considered comfort reads but the truth is that I don't reread them for comfort, meaning I don't reread them when I'm feeling down or sick.

I do reread them however when I'm feeling a bit disappointed in my reads, when everything seems to be repetitive and annoying and deja vue, that's when I like to read my old favourites. Now is one of those periods and I'm thoroughly enjoying the pleasure of revisiting some known characters, some interesting and emotional situations... but maybe that's just another form of comfort!

This is something I've started to do recently, I used to think my TBR pile was too big to allow me time to reread and so I could easily have 6 months or more between rereads. Well not anymore, I'm having such a great time since I started to organise my keepers and rereading my "doubtfuls" that I think I may have to start my own challenge and reread at least one old favourite a month!

What about you all, do you reread often?

  1. I don't usually reread books, not that I wouldn't want to I just feel guilty rereading when I have so many others I haven't tried. When I was a kid I reread all the time but now the only books I'm rereading are the Harry Potter ones and I'm thinking of rereading the first Diana Gabaldon to get to the rest of the series. But that's all!

Now, comfort authors I have a few like Jan Karon, Fannie Flagg, Maeve Binchy and Cathy Kelly.

  2. Hey, I haven't read any of those! Any titles you would suggest I look for?

  3. From Jan Karon you should try the Mitford series, they're so cute (here's the first one). And you're in luck if you want to because I have the first six volumes.

By Fannie Flagg I've only read two but my favourite was Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Caffe, I so regretted trading it.

Maeve Binchy has a lot of books, some better than others, in my opinion her older ones is where you should start, Tara Road is my absolute favourite and I have it in Portuguese if you want.

Cathy Kelly is a recent discovery and I only read two of hers but they were both excellent, Someone Like You and Best of Friends. Sadly I have none of hers as they were both borrowed.

  4. I also reread at least one book per month. It's not as much as I wished but it's what I can manage right now.:)

    My confort reads...Let's see...

    - Pride and Prejudice/Persuasion by Jane Austen
    - North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
    - The Shipping News by Annie Proulx
    - Of Human Bondage by Somerset Maugham
    - all the Stephanie Plum by Janet Evanovich
    - The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
    - As you Desire by Connie Brockway
    - The Devil you Know by Liz Carlyle
    - Slightly Dangerous by Mary Balogh
    - Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
    - Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard
    - Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

    Couldn't live without these.:)

  5. I'll go check Bookmooch to see what I can find from all the titles mentioned, thanks for the recommendations :-)

  6. I don't seem to get around to rereading, although there are plenty of books that I would like to reread, and I think about doing it sometimes!

I love to chat about books and stuff and I would love to hear from like minded readers. Please do leave me a comment :-)
