Married by Morning - Lisa Kleypas

For two years, Catherine Marks has been a paid companion to the Hathaway sisters—a pleasant position, with one caveat. Her charges' older brother, Leo Hathaway, is thoroughly exasperating. Cat can hardly believe that their constant arguing could mask a mutual attraction. But when one quarrel ends in a sudden kiss, Cat is shocked at her powerful response—and even more so when Leo proposes a dangerous liaison.
She is not at all what she seems...
Leo must marry and produce an heir within a year to save his family home. Catherine's respectable demeanor hides a secret that would utterly destroy her. But to Leo, Cat is intriguing and infernally tempting, even to a man resolved never to love again. The danger Cat tried to outrun is about to separate them forever—unless two wary lovers can find a way to banish the shadows and give in to their desires...

Leo Hathaway has been a secondary character in all of the previous books. On his return from France he finds hat a governess has been engaged for his two younger sisters. Between him and Catherine Marks the tension is always high and they trade sarcastic barbs whenever they are together. I have been wondering if Kleypas' would resist throwing them together and at the end of the previous book it was obvious that they would be the next couple.

Leo is a rather engaging gentleman and he knows that. In fact it seems that the only female that is impervious to his charm is Catherine Marks.  Although he has inherited his title a few years ago Leo is now being confronted with the fact his estate is not entailed and he fails to wed within a year he will lose it to another branch of the family. The solution seems to be finding a bride soon so a ball is planned and invitations are sent to all the eligible young ladies of the neighbourhood.

Catherine Marks has been hiding a secret the whole time she has lived with the Hathaways, Leo discovers part of it but it's during the Hathaway ball that she finds herself in danger... and is gallantly saved by Leo. Catherine is ashamed of her past and is afraid that she will have to leave the Hathaways if the truth becomes known. It will take all of Leo's powerful charm and determination to make her believe that there is nothing to be ashamed of...

I did enjoy Leo and Catherine and their constant bickering. They were funny, the sexual tension was well done and I found Catherine's past history both heartbreaking and different... not so much what she almost had to do but how she got there. Despite having rationally enjoyed it I don't think this is as memorable to me as Poppy and Harry's story, it's been a couple of weeks since I read it and the details are already a bit fuzzy. Still it was a very enjoyable read and I'm definitely getting to Beatrix's story next.

Grade: 4/5

Ps Am I the ony one sorry that there isn't a story about Jake Valentine, Rutledge's right hand man?

  1. Poppy and Harry's was my favourite too. I do wonder if Kleypas will go back to historicals at some point. They work so much much better for me than the contemporaries do, even though I do enjoy the contemporaries.

    1. I haven't tried her contemporaries yet but I do have them in the TBR pile. I think I'll try the Christmas book next month but I would certainly be in a lot more hurry to grab it if it were an historical...
