Dark Protector - Alexis Morgan

Devlin Bane: Born a Paladin, he is a member of an ancient band of warriors locked in a centuries-old war against evil.
His destiny: To die over and over again to protect mankind from the Others, only to be revived each time by his mortal Handler.
But his fierce strength and courage cannot save him from gradually becoming one of the monsters he was born to destroy.
Dr. Laurel Young, who has spent years training to become a Handler, must remain detached from her patients. But each time she revives the darkly compelling Devlin Bane, he claims a little more of her soul and incites in her desires that grow wilder and wilder -- even as he inches closer to losing his humanity. As the war against the Others grows more desperate, Laurel and Devlin can't help but give in to the fierce hunger that's sizzled between them for so long. Now they'll face the ultimate battle together -- to save a dark, passionate love that goes against every rule as they join forces to fight an enemy who is closer than they ever imagined....

I was feeling like reading something different (meaning non historical) and found this one in the TBR pile. I hadn't heard much about Alexis Morgan before but I found the blurb interesting and decided to give it a try.

I must admit I had some trouble understanding who the Others were and why they were attacking mankind. But they are and the Paladins are the warriors who defend the human world. They can be killed in battle and revived several times but eventually they loose all their humanity and they become Others too and have to be euthanised.

Dr Laurel Young is a Handler, she treats the Paladins and eventually kills them when the need arises. She has  always felt an attraction toward Devlin Bane, the leader of the Paladins, and when she treats him one more time that is apparent to him who feels the pull of the attraction too. Laurel has been studying if there is a way to avoid that the Paladins loose there soul after so many kills and Devlin is a part of that study. When they give in to their feelings his results show susprising results.

There is nothing really new in this story. Warriors being saved from darkness by the woman they love is a recurrent them in romance and one that we have seen many times in paranormals. However I did like Laurel and Devlin. They seemed pretty decent, unlike some of the other characters around, and I was looking forward to see how they would develop their relationship and to know more about the Others and what is making them attack.

It's apparent that this is the first in the series as the other Paladins are perfect sequel material. We even have a brooding, tortured one who I figured was going to be saved for last. While there was nothing that really stands out I was entertained while I read it and I am interested in following these characters onto the next book. I love series and it's nice to have another one to look forward to.

  1. I've read this book several years ago...it was interesting enough to follow the next books, but I've stopped at #5. It's...bland for me, especially after reading other things much more exciting and better.
But have fun, I hope your opinion will be different.
Still, if I remember well, my favorite of the 5 I've read was the 3rd.

  2. Hmm I'll try to make till the 3rd then. I think I already have the 2nd one laying around somewhere. Do you have the reviews on your blog?

  3. Ahhh no...only the 5th I think. I've read the others way before creating the blog and although I entertained the idea of doing some sort of retro reviews, the truth is I barely find the time to write about current books, much less older ones..perhaps one day...

  4. I totally understand that. I'm always meaning to reread and review books I've read pre-blog but it's seldom that I manage to.

I checked and I do have book 2 in the TBR pile. I'll read it and see how I like it before getting number 3 :-)

  5. Btw which paranormal series do you recommend? Mind that before starting Briggs and Singh I was a very picky reader and only read Christine Feehan. I started JR Ward series and read the first 2 or 3 books but then gave it up...
